Bromley Humanist is a non-religious registered charity (————————) and home to a group of passionate humanists dedicated to creating a world that is kind to everyone, regardless of their protected personal characteristics (religion or belief, race or ethnicity, age, ability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, marriage or civil partnership).   • It depends on what you volunteer for. Volunteering is very flexible. You can find one-off events that take a single afternoon, or roles that require a few hours each week.

  • It depends on the role. Some specialist roles often require a minimum commitment of a few months, whereas roles supporting events or fundraising are more flexible. Please contact us to discuss your specific interests.

  • It depends on the task you accept to do. Some tasks need to be done at a specific venue (like when you help us with an event), but most can be done remotely from wherever you are and whenever you have spare time. Please contact us to discuss the task that you would like to help us with.

  • No. It should not cost you money to donate your time. We will cover some expenses, such as public transport, parking, or basic lunch costs. However, you must coordinate this with us in advance and keep your receipts to get your money back.

  • It depends on the role or task you volunteer for.  In many cases, we look for a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, and we provide all the training you need for the role.  In other roles, you may need a qualification or expertise to do the job.  Please contact us to discuss the role you’re interested in and how you’d like to help us.  We’ll let you know the requirements for that role.

  • Yes. You are a volunteer and are under no legal obligation to continue if the role is not a good fit for you. You can also take a break for various reasons. However, we would appreciate it if you discussed your situation with us in advance and coordinated your break.

  • No, you can usually volunteer while claiming welfare benefits. However, you must still meet the conditions of your benefits and notify your job coach.

  • There is no upper age limit. The minimum age is 18 because of insurance requirements.

  • A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a criminal background check. You need one only if you are working with children or vulnerable adults, and the charity pays for it.

  • Yes, in many cases. We assess this on a case-by-case basis, depending on the offence and the role. Please contact us to discuss your case in confidence.

  • You generally need to complete a short form, provide two references, and show proof of ID (such as a passport or driving licence).
