• Human rights advocacy: Humanism often engages in social awareness activities and campaigns for human rights, including LGBTQ+ rights, bodily autonomy, and science-based climate action.  

• Humanist Ceremonies.  One of our most valuable services is providing non-religious alternatives for life’s milestones.  This fills a significant gap for those seeking meaning without religion. 

  • Our wedding ceremonies focus on the couple’s unique story and values.

  • Our naming ceremonies welcome a child into the community without reference to original sin or to baptism.

  • Our funeral ceremonies celebrate people’s lives, honouring their actual legacy and impact on others rather than a wishful, imaginary afterlife.

  • Any other significant events or achievements, such as birthdays, anniversaries, divorces, adoptions, graduations, book launches, housewarmings, reunions, and other gatherings, would be designed and conducted by our celebrants to help you celebrate that special occasion and leave a lasting positive effect on your life.

  • Our celebrants (masters of ceremonies) often hold an informal meeting with you to learn about your needs, gather your stories, and understand your vision.  They write a bespoke ceremony script from scratch, allowing for many edits until it is flawless.  They advise you on unique readings, poems, music choices, and alternatives.  They can incorporate symbolic acts such as handfasting (tying the couple’s hands together), sand ceremonies, candle-lighting, and more.  On the day, they manage the crowd, cue the music or readers, and anchor the service’s emotional flow.

• Non-religious Pastoral Care (secular chaplaincy): Non-religious and humanist individuals in hospitals, prisons, or universities often feel isolated.  Our trained members offer emotional support and a listening ear from a non-religious perspective. 

• Grief Support: Secular bereavement groups that focus on the reality of loss without resorting to clichés such as “it’s all part of a plan.”   

• Structured Community Support: Our members engage in numerous charitable initiatives that address vital issues such as poverty, homelessness, disability, and mental health, helping vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals. Unlike some religious charities, these services are offered without conditions or demands, only assistance and support, because it’s the right thing to do. 

• Education: We send speakers to schools, donate science books, and establish “Free Thinkers’ Clubs” for students of all ages to foster critical thinking. 

• Science Communication (Scientific Thinking): We host public talks on topics such as evolution, ethics, and space to foster a sense of wonder and awe without appealing to the supernatural. 

• Loneliness Mitigation and  Community-Building Events. Bromley Humanists offer a wide range of non-religious activities and services.  These include meetings with guest speakers, secular hymns, a choir, and popular music, accompanied by coffee and cake to foster social bonds.  These occasions may also take the form of Special Interest Circles, such as book clubs, hiking groups, or philosophy cafes, which help keep people connected.
