Give back to something that aligns with your values and passions.

Bromley Humanist is a non-religious registered educational charity (————————) and home to a group of passionate secular activists dedicated to creating a world that is kind to everyone, regardless of their protected personal characteristics (religion or belief, race or ethnicity, age, ability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, marriage or civil partnership). We are committed to living with compassion, kindness, and purpose. Collaboration and curiosity drive everything we do. We believe great results come from honesty, clarity, and open collaboration, all underpinned by a shared sense of purpose. You can support us by joining as a member, a volunteer, or both.

Make an impact: Join us as a volunteer to support universal, humanist, and secular values.

Volunteer with us.

Historically, many members, volunteers, and donors have found that moving from a religious mindset to a humanist one brings greater personal happiness.

They say that adopting a humanist mindset has helped them replace fear and anxiety with the genuine joy of serving others. Volunteers always emphasise that supporting local humanist groups is a vital way to bring people together.

They believe in the power of community and in the ethos of caring for people, which they see as central to humanism.

Volunteers are the backbone of our society. Some are members, and some are not, but they invariably run the charity through a network of collaboration and friendships.

Condition for Volunteering

Bromley Humanists (BH) is pro-reason and pro-human rights, not anti-religious. We defend everyone’s right to practise their faith, or none at all, safely. We want everyone to have equal rights, whether religious or not. We also believe that no religion should be privileged over others by the state or public services. There are no tests, oaths, holy books, or written doctrine. Anyone can join Bromley Humanists, as long as they agree with the charity’s purposes (objects) and the basic idea that humans can live ethical lives without religion. They do not need to be atheists or agnostics, or to give up the religious cultural heritage they grew up with, to be a humanist.

Volunteering Opportunities

1. General Assistants and Helpers - Multiple Openings:

We need people with a wide range of skills. Some may be highly specialised, while others simply need a willingness to help. Whatever your knowledge, background, or previous experience, if you’re passionate about building an inclusive, effective humanist community in Bromley and the surrounding areas, we’d like to hear from you. Here is how we expect our volunteers to help us:

  • Inclusive community: You do not need prior experience or a specific speciality to make a difference. Every skill set adds unique value to our team.

  • General supporters: Help with event logistics, public outreach, and administration.

  • Creativity: Share your talents in graphic design, photography, or storytelling.

  • Tech enthusiasts: Assist with website updates, data entry, or IT support.

  • Communicators: Write newsletters, manage social media, or translate documents.

  • Professionals: Offer specialised legal, financial, or strategic advice.

  • Flexible roles: We do our best to match the opportunities to your schedule, availability, and lifestyle.

  • Nature of roles: Some roles are remote, some are in-person, and some are hybrid.

  • Real impact: Your time directly supports humanism, secularism and human rights advocacy.

  • Skill growth: Gain experience in advocacy, campaigning, and community building.

If you can help us in any area and would like to support our cause, please complete the BH Application Form to start volunteering. We’ll send you more information once we receive your application.

2. Non-Executive Trustees - Multiple Openings:

The Board of Trustees at BH is seeking non-executive directors (e.g., law professionals, general counsel, chief financial officers, corporate risk directors, and chartered accountants) with proven corporate, legal, or financial expertise to join our Board of Trustees and support our long-term strategic governance, guard against structural risk (on a pro bono basis), and expand our humanism, secularism and human rights advocacy frameworks. These professional volunteers will help steer BH in the fight for systemic change, protect non-religious marginalised groups, and handle high-stakes legal advocacy. This allows middle managers and acting officers to focus on the charity’s core mission without technical interruptions. Here is how we expect these trusteeships to operate:

  • The Time Commitment: We expect 4 to 6 board meetings a year, each lasting 2 hours, plus about 2 hours of subcommittee review per month.

  • The Location Framework: Board meetings will be held in Bromley or central London, with some subcommittees and reviews held virtually.

  • Trustee Indemnity Insurance: The charity carries Trustee Indemnity Insurance to protect corporate officers and directors against legal or financial liabilities.

If you can help us in any of these areas and would like to support our cause, please complete the BH Application Form to start volunteering. We’ll send you more information once we receive your application.

3. Website Maintenance (Website Caretaker) - Multiple Openings:

This allows the trustees and other acting officers to focus on their core mission without technical interruptions. Depending on the nature of the task, this role could be done remotely, in person, or in a hybrid format. Here’s how we expect the website caretaker to help us:

  • Software Updates: Installing core CMS, plugin, and theme updates to prevent vulnerabilities.

  • Regular Backups: Automated daily or weekly site backups to ensure fast recovery if data is lost.

  • Security Monitoring: Scanning for malware, setting up firewalls, and fixing hacked files.

  • SSL Management: Keeping security certificates active to maintain user trust and secure data.

  • Accessibility and SEO Accessibility Audits: Keeping the site compliant with WCAG standards so disabled users can navigate it.

  • Mobile Optimisation: Making sure new content renders perfectly on phones and tablets.

  • Basic SEO Maintenance: Monitoring Google Search Console for indexing errors. And any other tasks that help the platform work efficiently.

These volunteer Social Media Officers, or Social Media Caretakers, are responsible for the day-to-day administration and updating of social media platforms (such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and X) and serve as the frontline digital voice for BH. The y manages the day-to-day running of our digital communities, creating engaging content and safeguarding our online spaces. This is an execution-focused role requiring close collaboration with senior leadership. The Social Media Caretakers will work directly under the guidance of the Communications Manager/Head of Communications to implement our messaging strategy, ensuring all outbound posts, replies, and community interactions strictly align with BH organisational policy, safeguarding guidelines, and the charity's official tone of voice. They work a maximum of two to three hours per week and help keep BH social media messages secure, functional, and up to date. This lets the trustees and other acting officers focus on their core mission without technical interruptions. Depending on the task, this role could be done remotely, in person, or in a hybrid format. Here’s how we expect the social media caretakers to help us:

  • Draft digital content: Write copy, film short-form videos (Reels/TikToks), and design basic graphics using tools such as Canva.

  • Coordinate sign-offs: Submit all weekly content calendars and campaign copy to the Communications Manager for formal approval prior to scheduling.

  • Adapt complex messaging: Work alongside senior staff to translate policy documents and impact reports into accessible, public-facing social posts.

This allows trustees and other acting officers to focus on their core mission without technical interruptions. Depending on the nature of the task, this role could be performed remotely, in person, or in a hybrid format. Here is how we expect CRM experts to help us:

6. Fundraising Specialists - Multiple Openings:

These fundraising specialist volunteers work two or three hours a week and help BH secure the revenue it needs to operate by developing strategies, managing donor relationships, and running targeted campaigns across various income streams. If you can help us in any of these areas and would like to support our cause, please complete the BH Application Form to start volunteering. We’ll send you more information once we receive your application.

7. Event Managers - Multiple Openings:

These event management volunteers work a maximum of two to three hours per week and help BH turn the charity's mission into experiences that raise money, increase public awareness, and build donor relationships. Because BH operates under tight financial constraints and strict regulations, these roles heavily focus on cost efficiency and volunteer engagement. Event managers help trustees and other acting officers focus on their core mission without technical interruptions. Depending on the task, this role could be done remotely, in person, or in a hybrid format. Here is how we expect event managers to help us:

  • Budget Tracking: Allocating resources strictly to maximise the return on investment (ROI), ensuring that the majority (at least 95%) of proceeds go to the cause rather than event overheads.

  • Sponsorship Outreach: Approaching local corporate partners and businesses to secure financial sponsorships or in-kind donations (like free venues, food, or raffle prizes).

  • On-Site Giving Operations: Setting up and managing donation streams, which include digital card readers, silent auctions, pledge drives, and live appeals.

  • Volunteer Coordination: Recruiting, briefing, and training unpaid volunteers to handle guest check-ins, guide attendees, and collect donations.

  • Donor Acknowledgement: Ensuring thank-you letters, tax receipts, and impact updates are promptly sent to attendees, donors, and corporate sponsors.

  • Financial Reporting: Cross-referencing donation totals, reconciling accounts, and presenting data reports on the total funds raised and lessons learned for future campaigns.

If you can help us in any of these areas and would like to support our cause, please complete the BH Application Form to start volunteering. We’ll send you more information once we receive your application.

8. Legal Professionals (Solicitors and Barristers) - Multiple Openings:

These legal professionals work a maximum of two to three hours per week and support BH on a voluntary (pro bono) basis. While both professions (solicitors and barristers) protect the charity's mission and assets, solicitors usually handle day-to-day operational law, transactional work, and setup, whereas barristers act as specialist consultants, providing formal legal opinions and courtroom advocacy. They support the trustees and other acting officers with the legal aspects of operational and transactional matters, enabling them to focus on their core mission with confidence. Depending on the nature of the task, this role could be done remotely, in person, or in a hybrid format. Here is how we expect legal professionals to help us:

  • Regulatory Relations: Managing interactions, registration, and reporting with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

  • Contracts and Grants: Drafting and reviewing complex funding agreements, partnership deals, service delivery contracts, and supplier procurement.

  • Taxation and Fundraising: Ensuring the charity remains compliant with HMRC regulations (such as Gift Aid and VAT exemptions) and the strict rules governing professional public fundraising.

  • Employment: Drafting employment contracts, advising on volunteer regulations, managing workplace disputes, or dealing with TUPE regulations during reorganisations.

  • Property and Real Estate: Advising charities on lease and rental negotiations and on purchasing properties.

  • Data Protection: Making sure donor records and vulnerable beneficiary data comply with UK GDPR.

  • Litigation, Disputes, and Legacy: Defending a charity’s right to a bequest when a family contests a deceased person's will.

  • Tribunal Representation: Barristers step in to represent charities at the First-tier Tribunal (Charity) or the High Court if the regulator or an aggrieved third party takes legal action.

  • Trusteeship: Many lawyers serve on a charity's board as independent volunteer trustees, using their strategic legal oversight to guide governance and reduce risk. We would be delighted to have your support on our board of trustees.

If you can help us in any or all of these areas and would like to support our cause, please complete the BH Application Form to start volunteering. We’ll send you more information once we receive your application.

9. A Choir Master (Community Choir Lead) - Multiple Openings:

We need an enthusiastic music professional to lead our choir for two hours a week. The ideal candidates need a specific blend of interpersonal warmth, basic musical competence, and a strong sense of local community spirit. A welcoming personality is far more critical than formal training. The essential requirements are listed below:

  • Core Soft Skills and Personality: Because the primary goal is to help ordinary people enjoy singing together, the choir leader must focus heavily on the social and emotional benefits of music.

  • High Energy and Enthusiasm: Ability to make rehearsals fun, uplifting, and engaging for adults of all musical abilities.

  • Inclusivity and Patience: A compassionate, encouraging demeanour ensuring that completely beginner singers feel welcome and nobody feels left behind.

  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills to build rapport quickly, manage a diverse room of personalities, and foster a supportive community spirit.

  • Musical and Teaching Capabilities: The leader does not need to be a concert pianist, but they do require practical skills to run a standard rehearsal.

  • Basic Vocal and Instrumental Skills: Ability to confidently pitch notes, sing clearly, and ideally provide basic accompaniment on a piano, guitar, or via high-quality backing tracks.

  • Teaching by Ear: The capacity to break down simple, uplifting harmonies, such as popular music, show tunes, or folk songs and teach them to individuals who likely cannot read sheet music.

  • Repertoire Selection: Good judgment in choosing accessible, feel-good songs that resonate with the specific charity's demographics.

  • Time Commitment and Logistics: Managing a two-hour weekly rehearsal involves the ability to plan a structured, punchy, 60-to-90-minute rehearsal that fits neatly within the designated weekly window. Willingness to spend a small amount of personal time outside the rehearsal learning the vocal parts and planning the session. Consistent weekly attendance, as community choirs rely heavily on the stability and routine provided by their leader.

If you can help us in these areas and would like to support our cause, please complete the BH Application Form to start volunteering. We’ll send you more information once we receive your application.
