Our Educational Philosophy
The educational philosophy of Bromley Humanists centres on developing and nurturing the whole person through reason, empathy, critical thinking, and a secular worldview. Rather than treating education as a tool for economic utility or rote testing alone, we see learning as a lifelong process meant to foster self-actualisation and responsible global citizenship. We approach education through a distinct framework rooted in human potential and empirical truth.
Evidence and Reason Over Dogma: Education must train people how to think, not what to think. Therefore, we advocate for scientific literacy, critical evaluation of sources, and a curriculum completely decoupled from religious indoctrination or supernatural frameworks.
Whole-Person and Holistic Development: Mirroring the psychological principles of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, we focus on integrating emotional intelligence, social responsibility, physical well-being, and cognitive growth.
Secular Moral Education: As a humanist organisation, we emphasise that morality stems from empathy, compassion, and human relationships rather than from divine commands. We believe ethical development should be taught through real-world problem-solving and understanding the societal impact of one's actions.
Intrinsic Motivation and Agency: Our educational philosophy champions learner-centred, self-directed learning, where exploration is encouraged, and failure is handled safely, minimising reliance on rigid extrinsic metrics such as grades.
How Can We Achieve Our Educational Targets
We deploy various strategies depending on the existing operating environment:
Curriculum and Resource Development: Creating structured, objective lesson plans, guides, and interactive media to teach humanism as a valid non-religious worldview to school teachers, primary and secondary school students, and self-directed learners aged 5–18.
Alternative Institutional Models: Establishing independent, non-dogmatic educational spaces. We aim to run experiential workshops that provide community-based humanist education on topics such as humanistic morality, purpose, and meaning. Targeted at the local community.
Dialogue and Coalition Building: Partnering with entities like other charities and universities, we strive to shift global frameworks toward “Education for Human Flourishing".
